They hated being labelled “blue-eyed soul”.
Critics loved the term. The band did not. They saw themselves as pulling from soul, rock, pop, and R&B without wanting a neat box slapped on it.

Despite the joint billing, it was never a 50/50 writing partnership.
Daryl Hall and John Oates worked more like specialists, Hall leaning into vocals and melodies, Oates into structure and polish. Less “soulmates”, more “very effective colleagues”.

Hall & Oates are officially the most successful duo in US chart history, with more Top 40 hits than any other pair. Quietly unbeatable.
